A Legacy of Northwoods Hospitality: Gerda Safer Inducted into the Wisconsin Lodging Hall of Fame9/29/2026 Starting in 1957, Gerda and her husband built A1 Gypsy Villa Resort in Eagle River cabin by cabin alongside their six children. Over seven decades, she transformed 100 acres on Cranberry Lake into a beloved 20-cabin sanctuary for multi-generational families, embodying the warmth, resilience, and genuine spirit of Northwoods hospitality.
Serving as Chair of the Wisconsin Innkeepers Association (now WHLA) in 1997, she was instrumental in the 1991 merger with the Wisconsin Hospitality, Recreation, and Travel Association, helping to unify lodging and tourism voices across the state. Recognized as Innkeeper of the Year in 2000, her contributions continue to inspire us. At our annual Conference in November, Gerda’s family will accept this honor on her behalf. Gerda’s family carries on her legacy by keeping the resort and the spirit of Northwoods hospitality alive. Her story reminds us that hospitality is more than just a business. It's about creating a place where memories are made and making families feel welcomed.
