Spirit of Hospitality Awards
The Spirit of Hospitality Award recognizes employees who set an example for their team and the industry with their exceptional dedication and service. The 2024 recipients included individuals from various roles and establishments, all dedicated to enhancing guest experiences.
Hero of Hospitality Award
The Hero of Hospitality Award, established in 2018, acknowledges hotel employees who demonstrate extraordinary courage and quick thinking in emergencies, potentially saving lives. This award acknowledges these remarkable acts of bravery and highlights the critical role hospitality professionals play in ensuring guest safety.
In May 2021, Alex responded to a distressed call from a front desk agent who was attempting to help a parent with a drowning child in our indoor pool area at the Four Points by Sheraton Milwaukee North Shore. The front desk agent could not help the parent and called for assistance. With little time to react, Alex jumped into the pool and helped rescue the child from drowning.
Wisconsin Lodging Hall of Fame
In conjunction with the Spirit of Hospitality Awards, the WHLA also inducted new members into the Wisconsin Lodging Hall of Fame, which acknowledges significant contributions to the industry. Three individuals were celebrated for their lasting influence on the state’s hospitality landscape.
Richard Batley
Wisconsin Lodging Hall of Fame Class of 2024
Richard Batley was inducted into the Wisconsin Lodging Hall of Fame for his remarkable 50-year career in the hospitality industry. His journey from a 16-year-old dishwasher to a successful hotel owner and developer exemplifies his dedication and vision. Batley's achievements include transforming the Bridgewood Golf Course into the Best Western Premier Bridgewood Resort Hotel & Conference Center, revitalizing properties in Appleton and Oshkosh, and his ongoing commitment to community service and maintaining high standards in hospitality. The award was presented to Richard by his son, Ryan Batley, the General Manager of the Best Western Premier Bridgewood Resort Hotel & Conference Center.
Scott Faulkner was inducted into the Wisconsin Lodging Hall of Fame for his significant contributions to the state's hospitality industry, particularly his leadership in transforming The Edgewater in Madison. His induction recognizes his role in modernizing and expanding the iconic hotel while preserving its rich history, as well as his efforts to make it a community hub and destination. Scott's commitment to continuing his family's legacy in hospitality, his vision for creating memorable guest experiences, and his dedication to community engagement were key factors in his recognition. The award was presented to Scott by Amy Supple, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at The Edgewater in Madison.
Stephen M. Magnuson was inducted into the Wisconsin Lodging Hall of Fame for his exceptional career and significant contributions to the state's hospitality industry. His induction recognizes his leadership roles at Marcus Hotels & Resorts, including his instrumental part in launching Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark and Orange Lake Vacation Club in Lake Geneva. Magnuson's dedication to elevating hospitality standards, enhancing guest experiences, and his unwavering commitment to mentoring and developing talent within the industry were key factors in his recognition, ensuring his impact on Wisconsin's lodging sector will continue for years to come. The award was presented by Kevin Gallagher, Vice President of Project Management for Marcus Hotels & Resorts, who was mentored by Magnuson.

Key to Hospitality Awards
At last, WHLA leaders presented inaugural Key to Hospitality awards to three elected officials in recognition of their significant contributions to the state's tourism economy. Over 140 members attended the WHLA Awards Luncheon, which was MC'd by WHLA Chair Elect Rory Madsen, Resort General Manager of the Gordon Lodge in Baileys Harbor. WHLA Board Chair Jay Schumerth, VP of Operations for First Hospitality, and WHLA President & CEO Bill Elliott, CAE, presented the awards.
