My Experience at WHLA Action Day: Learning, Advocacy, and Inspiration
By Noah Rosenberger, WHLA Student Board Representative
As a student at the University of Wisconsin–Stout majoring in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management, I’m always looking for ways to grow both professionally and personally. This year, I have the incredible opportunity to serve as a WHLA Student Board Representative and attend WHLA Action Day in Madison—a day filled with learning, networking, and advocacy for Wisconsin’s lodging industry. I was especially excited to attend because it gave me the chance to see how policy and hospitality intersect in real-time and how our voices as students and future professionals can make a real impact.
WWIL Breakfast
The day began with the Wisconsin Women in Lodging (WWIL) Breakfast, which set an inspiring tone. The room was filled with energy, mentorship, and genuine connection. A standout moment was hearing Lt. Governor Sara Rodriguez speak. Her message about resilience, leadership, and supporting the future of Wisconsin’s workforce deeply resonated with me.
WHLA Action Day
The morning sessions with Bill and Kathi were incredibly insightful. They broke down current legislative issues affecting the lodging industry, from workforce challenges to tourism funding. As a student, it can be difficult to grasp the behind-the-scenes advocacy work that shapes our industry.
Later, visiting the Wisconsin State Capitol and attending meetings with legislators. I had the chance to speak with legislators and share the student perspective on issues facing hospitality. What surprised me most was how receptive lawmakers were to our stories. Looking Back
Attending WHLA Action Day gave me a real-world understanding of the policies that shape the lodging industry and helped me develop confidence in speaking up for what the industry believes in. For any student thinking about attending in the future: go. It will challenge you, inspire you, and connect you with people who genuinely want to help you succeed.
A huge thank-you to WHLA, my professors at UW–Stout, and everyone who made this opportunity possible. Your support means the world, and I can’t wait to carry what I’ve learned into the next chapter of my hospitality journey.
