A Guardian at the GateThe journey into Dellshire begins with a greeting from Golspar, a massive, fire-breathing dragon standing guard at the resort’s entrance. The vision for this legendary guardian began when ADCI Partner and VP of Design, Jason Ryan, discovered the work of master metal sculptor Kevin Stone. Stone had gained international acclaim for his 15,000-pound steel model of Drogon from Game of Thrones. Seeking a signature piece to anchor the resort's identity, Ryan presented the concept to owner Steve Uphoff of Uphoff Ventures. Once Uphoff embraced the vision, the team coordinated closely with Stone to transition from conceptual sketches to a breathtaking, 70-foot reality. Golspar is not merely a statue; he is a functional marvel equipped with a propane fire system, serving as a literal beacon for travelers entering the realm. High-End Medieval RealismBuilding a 16th-century manor in the modern day is a significant architectural challenge, especially when the goal is "high-end realism" rather than a theme-park facade. To achieve a storybook environment that feels both lived-in and legendary, the team focused on three architectural pillars: massive stone masonry, gothic windows, and sweeping rooflines. Finding stone of a sufficient scale was a primary hurdle. Standard manufactured stone often lacks the visual weight required for a castle. Ryan collaborated with County Materials and the masons at Kraemer Brothers to hand-lay oversized stones, giving the structure a grounded, ancient feel. Complementing the masonry are gothic-arched windows inspired by the castles of Scotland and Ireland. While rare in modern builds, Ryan felt these shapes were essential to the narrative. The most striking feature, however, may be the dramatic, swooping rooflines. Inspired by global traditional architecture and fantasy lore, these curves required an intense technical partnership with Kraemer Brothers to execute. The result is a silhouette that looks as though it were pulled directly from the pages of a fairy tale. Engineering the TerrainThe site itself, the historic former home of Fort Dells, presented unique topographical challenges. Developing the steep landscape required surgical precision. Ryan and Neil Pfaff, Engineering Services Manager at Vierbicher and Associates, frequently remarked that the building couldn't have been shifted 12 inches in any direction without compromising the integrity of the design. By balancing the existing slopes with the needs of a 208-room hotel and a massive family entertainment center, the team created a dynamic structure that offers stunning vantage points of the Wisconsin River and Hulbert Creek. A Realm for Every GuestInside, the magic continues. ADCI Senior Interior Designer, Lauren Johnson, integrated hints of foliage and greenery throughout the castle to tie into the "druid" storyline. For families, the resort’s towers offer children their own private "realms" at the top, making the architecture itself part of the play experience. For those seeking a quieter escape, the north tower features romantic suites overlooking the winding waters of Hulbert Creek. These secluded rooms offer panoramic views with no direct neighbors, creating a sense of private luxury. Amenities and EvolutionThe resort’s amenities, such as Serpent’s Bay and the adult-only Scale Cove, balance high-energy aquatic fun with sophisticated relaxation. Even the event spaces were reimagined; The West Wing offers an elegant alternative to standard commercial halls, featuring 13-foot ceilings and ornate chandeliers designed for upscale weddings and corporate gatherings. As Dellshire is completed, it stands as a testament to what happens when deep regional roots meet limitless imagination. By blending cutting-edge mixed-reality technology with ancient architectural aesthetics, it is not just building a hotel, they are building a legend. The idea of a fantasy-themed resort sounds incredible. It seems like Dellshire is aiming to offer something quite different from the traditional waterpark experience.
