At A Glance: Acorn Ridge Motel
Preserving Character While Adding Comfort
When Mark and Mae Wilton took over Acorn Ridge, they weren’t just buying a business — they were continuing a legacy. The former owners had maintained the property with care for 25 years, and the transition was rooted in trust and shared vision.
“They wanted to sell to people like them, just 30 years younger,” Mark said. “What it had going for it was that it was clean, well maintained, and had great hospitality. What it needed was updated amenities and a fresh marketing strategy.” With this foundation, Mark, Mae, and the team launched into their first off-season with a clear goal: enhance the guest experience while preserving the motel’s nostalgic roadside charm. Top priorities included updating worn carpeting with durable vinyl plank flooring, installing new windows, and upgrading in-room amenities like 50” smart TVs, hospitality-grade Keurig coffee makers, and wireless charging ports at the nightstands. “We knew the rooms needed updates,” Mark added, “but it was important to keep the retro vibes.” Smart Layouts & Thoughtful Design Touches
Acorn Ridge’s rooms may be compact, but smart design decisions made a big impact. Fridges and microwaves were relocated into new custom-built vanities, creating more usable space and a cleaner visual layout. The addition of shelving under the sinks helped maximize functionality without clutter.
Retro-inspired décor gives each room a distinct sense of place, and more nostalgic touches are on the way — including historic photos of outdoor Wisconsin life from the 1960s and ’70s, sourced with the help of the local historical society. The updated flooring, a light luxury vinyl plank, brightened the rooms and paired well with the classic wood paneling, preserving the cozy, cabin-like atmosphere that repeat guests cherish. A Personal Touch and a Growing Vision
With help from family — especially Mae’s father Tim, who led much of the renovation work — the project remained hands-on and deeply personal. The motel's refresh wasn’t just a visual upgrade; it was also an investment in operations, with better layouts, tech, and guest comfort.
That hands-on spirit is carrying over into future plans, too. This spring, the team is enhancing the outdoor guest areas for better entertainment opportunities and are currently building a retro-themed on-site tavern named in Tim’s honor. To better serve groups, the property now offers shuttle service via a new 15-passenger bus, ideal for wedding guests, event attendees, or travelers enjoying the Princeton area. Feedback from Long-Time Guests
While the changes are recent, early guest feedback has been glowing — particularly from returning travelers who have stayed at Acorn Ridge for a decade or more.
“The biggest difference people notice is the removal of old carpeting,” Mark said. “Guests say the rooms feel bigger, brighter, and cleaner.” The modern touches — from larger TVs to updated lighting — have helped the motel confidently adjust room rates while delivering clear added value. And long-time guests appreciate the commitment to keeping the classic feel alive. Plan Your Stay
