Behind every keynote speaker, breakout session, networking event, sponsorship, and carefully planned detail is an incredible team of people working to create an experience that educates, inspires, and brings the lodging industry together. Few people understand that process better than WHLA Vice President Monica Goeke, CAE.
As the driving force behind conference planning, Monica spends much of the year working alongside the WHLA staff, Conference Committee, volunteer leaders, sponsors, speakers, and host venue to ensure every attendee feels welcomed and leaves with something meaningful. Throughout our conversation, Monica consistently redirected the spotlight toward the volunteers, committee members, sponsors, hotel partners, and WHLA team that make the conference possible. That quiet humility says as much about the Wisconsin Lodging Conference & Trade Show as any schedule or promotional brochure ever could. "We all want to level this up," Monica said with a smile while describing months of planning. "Everyone involved genuinely cares about making this the best experience possible." That shared commitment has become the heartbeat of Wisconsin's largest gathering of hospitality professionals. Checking In to Something Bigger
This year's conference theme, Check-In. Level Up., works on several levels.
Yes, attendees will literally check into the Kalahari Resort & Convention Center. But Monica hopes they'll also check into something less tangible. "I think checking in means stepping away from your day-to-day," she explained. "Checking in to new ideas, checking in to the people around you, and really being present." If hospitality is about making people feel welcome, then the Wisconsin Lodging Conference & Trade Show is hospitality turned inward—three days dedicated to the people who spend the other 362 days creating memorable experiences for everyone else. For hospitality professionals, that's easier said than done. Owners are juggling operations. General managers are solving problems before breakfast. Department leaders are balancing staffing, guest satisfaction, budgets, and the countless moving pieces that come with running a successful property. It's an industry that rarely slows down. For three days, though, everyone gets the opportunity to step away from their own property and reconnect with an entire industry that understands exactly what those days look like. "Everyone gets to come together," Monica said. "We're learning together, eating together, having fun together. That's what makes it so special." Built by Hospitality People
One theme surfaced again and again throughout our conversation: people.
Not programming. Not the difference between nametags and lanyards. People. Ask Monica about the conference theme, and she immediately talks about the volunteer Conference Committee that spends months shaping the event. Ask about the trade show, and she highlights the relationships that develop between vendors and lodging properties. Ask about first-time attendees, and she shifts the conversation toward making sure every newcomer feels welcomed from the moment they arrive. "Our members work in hospitality," she said. "Making people feel welcome is what they do every day." That philosophy doesn't stop once they leave their own hotels. Returning attendees intentionally seek out newcomers, volunteer ambassadors make introductions throughout the conference, and encourage experienced members to reach out and say hello. It's a small thing, but one that perfectly reflects the welcoming culture Monica and the Conference Committee have worked hard to build. "We really care about people's first experience," she said. "We don't want anyone to be nervous about coming." Learning From People Who Understand Your World
Education has always been one of the cornerstones of the Wisconsin Lodging Conference & Trade Show, but this year's programming is designed to encourage something beyond simply listening to presentations.
Attendees can explore focused educational tracks covering Leadership, Revenue, and Innovation, while dedicated roundtable discussions create opportunities to learn directly from one another. The goal isn't simply to hear from experts—it's to leave with ideas that can immediately make a difference back at your own property. Some of the most valuable conversations happen around a table with people facing many of the same challenges you are. Whether it's an independent resort owner from the Northwoods, a branded hotel leader from Milwaukee, or a general manager from Door County, attendees quickly discover that while every market is unique, many of the industry's biggest opportunities are shared. "It's powerful when everyone gets to come together," Monica said. "People realize they're not alone." A Trade Show That Feels Like Part of the Experience
Walk into many conferences and you'll often find vendors hoping attendees eventually wander through the exhibit hall.
WHLA intentionally takes a different approach. Dedicated trade show hours mean the exhibit floor becomes the destination, not the event happening down the hall. This year's show will feature more than 80 exhibitors, the return of the popular Women in Lodging wine pull benefiting career development scholarships, a new WHLA Hub where members can learn more about membership and marketing opportunities, and even customized WHLA merchandise produced on-site. It's informative. It's interactive. And it's supposed to be fun. After all, as we joked during our conversation, if you're already at the Kalahari Resort, you might as well enjoy the experience, even if that means sneaking in a ride down a waterslide between sessions. That balance between professionalism and fun isn't accidental. The conference celebrates an industry built around creating memorable guest experiences, so it only makes sense that the people creating those experiences have one of their own. More Than Three Days
As our conversation wound down, I asked Monica what she hopes people are saying as they head home.
"I hope they're thinking, 'I had so much fun. I'm so glad I work in hotels or lodging. I have new ideas that are going to make what I do every day a little easier, a little more meaningful, and a little more fun.'" It's a remarkably human answer. One that perfectly reflects the conference itself. Behind every breakout session, every networking reception, every educational speaker, every sponsor, and every carefully planned detail is a team of people who genuinely wants attendees to leave feeling energized. And perhaps no one embodies that spirit more than Monica herself. Throughout our conversation, she consistently redirected praise toward the volunteers, committee members, sponsors, industry leaders, and WHLA staff who help make the conference possible. It was a reminder that great hospitality often begins behind the scenes, with leaders who care more about creating memorable experiences than receiving recognition for them. After nearly a decade of helping shape the Wisconsin Lodging Conference & Trade Show, Monica has become one of the steady forces behind its continued success. Yet if you asked her about that accomplishment, she'd almost certainly tell you about the incredible committee chair she's working with this year, the sponsors who continue to invest in the event, the Kalahari team that helps bring it to life, or the members whose passion inspires the conference in the first place. That may be exactly why the conference continues to grow stronger each year. Join Us This November
