The event began at the Best Western Premier Park Hotel with presentations from WHLA President & CEO Bill Elliott, CAE, and WHLA's contract lobbyist Kathi Kilgore, who provided an overview of critical issues and tips for the afternoon’s scheduled meetings at the capitol. Sharon Sykes from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shared information about AHLA initiatives and events. Attendees enjoyed lunch sponsored by Sid Grinker Restoration then heard from Tyler August, Wisconsin State Assembly Majority Leader, who addressed the group as the featured speaker.
In the afternoon, attendees met with elected officials and their staff members at the Wisconsin State Capitol during pre-scheduled meetings to advocate for the industry. During these meetings, attendees expressed gratitude for the recent repeal of the Personal Property Tax. They also discussed key issues, including a bill to create a $10 million opportunity grant fund for large-scale events, protecting the September 1 school start date law, and human trafficking awareness training.
Following the meetings, attendees gathered at The Post at the Best Western Premier Park Hotel to enjoy refreshments and conversation.
While you can always rely on your WHLA staff to advocate for the industry in Madison, we know from experience that legislators place a lot of value on hearing from their constituents directly. These legislators are from the same cities and towns you live in, so sharing your stories provides context to the issues we lobby for.
Advocacy efforts continue throughout the year - they don’t stop when Action Day ends. Watch your email for WHLA Action Alerts and Capitol Insider briefings to stay current on advocacy issues affecting Wisconsin’s lodging industry.
