This upcoming 2024 travel season is one that Wisconsin hoteliers across the state are looking forward to. ​Rising inflation and slower winter travel has many hoteliers hopeful for Summer months, and many properties report an increase in advanced bookings at this point in the year from previous years.

​At WHLA, we strive to strengthen the lodging industry in Wisconsin by providing our members with valuable educational resources, networking opportunities, and innovative solutions. Our members play a vital role in keeping the industry vibrant and healthy across the state.

We are thrilled to unveil our revamped InnTouch with WHLA annual publication! Over the past year, we’ve been hard at work reshaping our communications to be more timely and efficient.

I have the privilege to serve our membership as WHLA’s Board Chair in 2024 and I am thrilled with the accomplishments and direction of our organization. I am also humbled to follow in the footsteps of a long line of hospitality leaders whom I respect and am honored to have served with for many years. We are forging ahead on a very positive trajectory.

Wisconsin, also known as America’s Dairyland, is certainly famous for cheese, beer, and the Green Bay Packers, but it also has some stunning landscapes, vibrant cities, 4 unique seasons, and importantly, warm hospitality that is known around the country. Wisconsin offers a unique opportunity for individuals seeking a career in the hotel and hospitality industry. This thriving industry provides numerous benefits and perks, making it an ideal choice for those looking to advance quickly without the burden of student debt. (That is not to say you shouldn’t pursue higher education if it is the right fit for you!)

​Several important tax changes have been made in Wisconsin, be sure you are ready for them. There has been an increase in the Retailer’s Discount Deduction, and changes to sales taxes in the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County.

​Extended stay hotels have emerged as major contenders in the ever-evolving realm of hospitality. Hotel owners are increasingly recognizing the potential for profitability in this segment, while guests appreciate the affordability, comfort and convenience these establishments offer.

​The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association is pleased to announce that James Ferguson will be closing out the 2023 Wisconsin Lodging Conference & Trade Show scheduled for November 5-7, 2023 at the Holiday Inn Stevens Point Conference Center. His keynote “How to Ensure Employees are Seen, Heard, and Supported” will be presented on Tuesday, November 7. This session, along with all other programming for the event, was selected by the WHLA Education/Conference Committee, a group of volunteer leaders from the Wisconsin hospitality community. 

​Effective immediately, the IRS has put a temporary hold on accepting any new Employee Retention Credit (ERC) applications.
